IFS is an evidence-based approach to trauma therapy. We all have “parts” of ourselves (all of which have good intentions, whether their role is ‘maladaptive’ or ‘adaptive’), that are formed by life experiences. These “parts” can get stuck in time where they initially developed. “Parts” serve an important function in how we navigate the world.
Internal Family Systems
(IFS)
Here’s an example:
You’re an adult visiting your parents at your childhood home. You become triggered and no longer feel like your adult self, but like your younger, child self. “Parts” can be seen as protective, (i.e. ‘managers’ and ‘firefighters'), working hard to prevent or stop emotional pain. The painful, often young, vulnerable “parts” (i.e. 'exiles'), carry the intense emotions and experiences.
The goal of IFS is to become integrated with these parts–approaching "parts" with curiosity, calmness, confidence, compassion, courage, creativity, connection, and clarity, to foster internal harmony.
